HERITAGE OF MEI HO HOUSE “INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2024” PROGRAMMES:
MUSEUMS FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
This year, the theme of International Museum Day is “Museums for Education and Research”, highlighting the importance of museums as dynamic educational institutions that foster learning, discovery, and cultural understanding. In response to this theme, the Heritage of Mei Ho House will provide the public with an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s community development since the 1950s, the living conditions and changes experienced by residents of resettlement buildings, as well as various aspects of social life through exhibition, guided tours, and different forms of activities.
“Oral Connections: Constructing Community Memory through Museum Oral History” Thematic Talk
Oral history, a unique form of historical documentation, serves as a convergence of individual and collective memory. At the Heritage of Mei Ho House, the preserved and exhibited oral histories of the former residents play an equally significant role alongside artifacts and historical photographs, offering visitors a narrative perspective to understand the life in resettlement areas and the evolution of the community.
The thematic talk “Oral Connections: Constructing Community Memory through Museum Oral History” will be delivered by Dr. Wong Wai Ling, a Senior Oral History Researcher. Dr. Wong will explore the various applications of oral history in museums, including collection, preservation, and presentation, which underscores the importance of community collaboration in preserving and transmitting collective memory.
