YHA MEI HO HOUSE YOUTH HOSTEL OPEN DAY 2017
ROCK THE MEGA WATERMELON BALL @MHH
Watermelon ball is a typically plastic toy in the 70-80s, invented and manufactured by Hongkongers. With the limited space in the public estates, it was a popular leisure as it is inexpensive and lack of bounce which would not easily break things. Yet it has ceased production over the time and become our collective memories.
YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel Open Day 2017 was held on 20-21 May (Sat & Sun). With the theme “Rock the Mega Watermelon Ball @MHH”, visitors were encouraged to share their happy memories and help in extending the stories of old public housing.
In the first-ever Mega Watermelon Ball Hotspot, visitors were having fun with the discontinued watermelon balls and newly tailor-made mega watermelon balls. No matter what age they are, parents and children enjoyed taking selfies and enrolling in the mininostalgic watermelon ball match!
Children loved the colourful mini watermelon ball.
Revitalized from Mei Ho House, YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel is a city hostel extending the life of the building and the stories of old public housing in a vivid way. Hostel rooms, which are revitalized from original units, and heritage of Mei Ho House welcomed public to visit.
MINI 41 provided various nostalgic childhood snacks, including Dragon’s Beard Candy, Traditional Candy & Coconut Wrap, and Aeroplane Olive etc.
Simply a plastic watermelon ball can recall the old memories of the lives in public housing estates when having it on the narrow verandas could make the day. We aimed to preserve not only the features of Hong Kong old buildings, but also the relationships and intangible spirit of Hongkongers.
